wd-45 erratic timing

When adjusting the timing on my wd-45. I find when using a timing light, that what seems like every third/fourth revolution. The timing mark jumps about a half inch for one "fire" and then comes back back to the same spot. Instead of staying rock steady like I'm use to seeing when useing a timing light. Does anybody know what causes this? I know on a car a bad timing chain will cause this, but this has gears. Could it be something in the distributor?

Camshaft endplay, or distributor bushing wear can cause this.

I have read that some tractors have vacuum chambers.I have good reason for asking this as the top half where the points are mounted does come loose on some designs and can cause all sorts of trouble.Also check the mechanical advance by turning the rotor by hand and see if it always returns back to the fully retarded position. If it is sticky clean and lube.Have the rubbing block not hitting the cam because this can give you a inconsistent impression.CENTAUR
