I posted yesterday about my 52WD not wanting to lift round bales with the three point and the thoughts came back that the pump might need attention. How hard are the pumps to get at and are they tough to rebuild.I cam wrench ok but have never been in one of these pumps.
Thanks in advance
Dave

Where do you get a rebuild kit for a WD pump? Agco have em? What should I expect to pay? I am thinking of ripping mine apart as it is acting up.

Agco has the springs and balls with shims to put behind the bypass, and o ring seals if you need them. I don't think it is that expensive. If you need spool valves you could probably get them if needed, but they don't usually go bad unless they are really scored and sticking in the bores. Usually the springs go bad or worn, on the top of the pump. They can be replaced by taking off the hold positioning valve and unscrewing the 4? nuts on top of the pump. Lift them out with the balls under the springs. If the pump is weak a (total) of 8 shims go behind the large bypass spring inside the pump to increase pump pressure. If the pump is weak usually Agco puts all the shims in now that they are getting up there in age and use. The total shims should equal one eighth of an inch I was told. Hope this helps you.

Hey Dave, if you do try to fix or rebuild that hydraulic pump, do yourself a favor and DO NOT use the exploded view diagram in the WD45 Allis Chalmers book. It shows the exploded view wrong. I found out the hard way taking the pump off several times racking my brain trying to figure out what the problem was as it did not lift like it should. I finally took it to a good Allis dealer that rebuilds them and they told me that they seen many of them came in that way in the past because they put it together by the book. Apparently, many of the old books were printed incorrectly. Mine was a 1956 WD45 model. Hope this helps somebody!

Thanks CWL,I might leave this one alone also.I haven't gotten any of the round bales this year and don't really plan to.Maybe I can find a punp in the local tractor boneyard and play with it instead of disabling mine. Thanks fer the info
Dave

They are easy to remove from the tractor. Then the rebuild can be done on a work bench. It is a four piston pump that operates off of a lobed shaft that pretty much works the same as a cam shaft in an overhead cam engine. Before you tear into it I would suggest plumbing a high pressure guage into the pressure side of the system to see where you're at. If my memory serves me correctly the pressure should be 3300-3500psi when the pump hits top pressure. When I wanted to check mine I found a gauge and a surge snubber for it from Northern Tool very reasonable. I got the guage that had a stainless housing and I just left it plumbed into the system. I does the same thing as the traction boost guages on the WD45s except I have actual numbers telling me what the pressure on the pump system is. Any way if your pump shuts off when lifting at a low pressure and the pressure doesn't bleed off, then I would say you have a valve problem as opposed to a pump problem. Mine will shut off around 2800psi and hold for a very long time without bleeding pressure down. That is why I think that the spring in the max pressure curcuit is a little weak. I just haven't taken the time to pull it apart to mess with it as it will still lift everything that I really need it to. When I was using it on the bale I was really just playing.
