in constant pursuit of asking dumb questions. on my 39 model B @ the ignition switch box there is a 3 position pull switch on the left.all the way in/pulled out one notch/all the way-lights come on. what is the middle part for? and where should this switch be while running tractor? i need to get a hold of an oem operators book if availible. thanks.also wondering if you can get a complete wiring harness for this tractor, which over the years has been converted to 12 volt negative ground.

We service and repair the OEM 3 position switches and have an exchange program on them. The switch itself is pretty simple just like the tractor it's connected to. The way the switch works is increasing and decreasing the ground to the Gennie. First position (all the way in) is normal charging rate (through the resistor on the bottom) @ 3amps to the battery. Second position is Lights on-resistor by-passed, 10-12 amps to the battery. Third position- Lights out- high charge only. Because this switch regulates the ground, make sure the switch is grounded correctly to the Ammeter box. Rust, corrosion, and paint will inhibit the switch from working correctly resulting in a non-charge problem HTH One thing you want to avoid is running 12V throught this switch. The higher current of 12V creates hi heat in these switches where the selector disc warps and position selection fails eventually taking out the switch... Steve@B&B

i went to my agco dealer to get a new light switch for my C, as the orinnal 3 way switch was long gone when i got it, also converted to 12 volt. i found that with the key switch, there was no room in my box for the OEM 2 way switch, so i ended up useing one toggle switch for the lights and one for the flashers i installed. both lights and flashers have there own fuse now too.

You can get the switches from a parts store that we're not allowed to mention on this site...

Actually, my '50 B has the same switch and, proper operation is:

Switch In - normal charging, no lights
1st Position out - normal charging, lights on
All The Wat Out - high charging, lights off

And yes, you can still get harnesses, new switches, and wiring diagrams for them.

Over the years it may well have been converted to either a Generator that used a full fledged Voltage Regulator (versus the original 2 wire cutout relay and light switch Low/High charge field current controller) or else an alternator, and with either that 3 position light switch would no longer be used as any sort of Low/High Charge controller. If all else works okay n she keeps the battery charged n the lights go on n off theres really no need to change it to a regular On/Off only light switch. John T

From the factory, the switch worked with the charging system. All the way in was low charge, middle was high charge and, all the way out was high charge with lights on. With the 12 volt sustem, I'm sure that all the switch does now is to turn the lights on.
