Hello;

I replaced the voltage regulator with a new one made in U.S.A. and cleaned up the commutator bars on the generator.

My question is: When I check the voltage setting do you use the reading from the ARM and GRD? Or directly across the battery, or what?
Also, when I start adn run it the ammeter shows it is charging . From eight , then it drops a bit after a while. I get 14 volts measured as the first one I mentioned. this is on a 63 D-17 series III.
thanks

The open unloaded output of a genny (from its ARM post to case/frame/ground) dont really tell ya all that much, its what it does when coupled up to a load like a battery that counts. If a battery is good and shes charging a good genny will increase the battery voltage from 12.6 what it is not running to the 13 to 14 or a lil over range. Thats how to tell if its charging the battery, if its capable of increasing its voltage (assuming the battery is okay) so put the voltmeter on the battery n see what it is setting then when running. If the Voltage Regulators Cutout Relay is good (not resistive carboned contacts) and works, once a good working genny is up to speed and the cutout relay latches in, notwithstanding minor voltage drops in ammeter or wiring or VR, the voltage on the battery and the VR's BAT terminal and the gennys ARM post should be fairly close due to minor expected allowable voltage drops.

Hello John T.

Just wanted to say thanks. I got it to read just over 14 volt on the battery running. It reads prety darn steady when I take it off the armature, only slight bounce. Cleaning that commutator sure helped.

Have a good night
