I purchased a 51 WD this summer with a locked up motor. I got the motor unstuck and it runs really good. I noticed while I had the head off and was cleaning aound on the block it had a "Power CraterII" sticker on it. Is that the original designation or could it be a WD-45 motor? How can I find out without pulling the motor apart

You can put a D21 sticker on the side of a D12, but obviously that won`t change what the tractor really is. If you buy something based on decals, you will get taken more times than not. With the head off you could have easily measured the bore and stroke of the engine, to know what parts were stock size and what ones were bigger. With the head back on, you could pull the oil pan and measure the bore and stroke, or you could maybe measure the stroke through the spark plug hole.

The most significant difference between the WD and the WD45 engine is the crankshaft, with the '45's longer stroke. It can be installed in a WD, and you can't tell from the outside....

I have a 1951 WD which has the 45 upgrade to the engine using AC power crater pistons. The obvious difference is the presence of the larger carburetor and air cleaner. If you can find a mechanic who has one of those scopes which can reach through the spark plug hole and look around, he could determine whether the piston tops are cratered.

If it has ever been repainted since new the Decal set for a WD-WD45 has that Decal as part of the set.Like Myers said,an Inspection Plate on the side of the Block Red Flags it as a WD and if there is no Inspection Plate it would be a WD45.I had a WD with an M&W Power Dome Piston Set and actually it could outpull my stock WD45. This was in the early 1960's and TSC and every Dealer sold Overhaul Kits to increase Power.

On the spark plug side on the engine there will be a bolt on plate if its a wd, the 45 doesnt have the plate..
