the maroon tractors had the shifter on the floor between your legs it had a dry engine clutch with a 3 speed powershift. the black belley had the shifter on the counsole with a torquelimiter and a wet clutch also had a 3 speed powershift. thats a fair amount of tractor for 5k but they are old and if it starts causing problems 5k in repaires wont go far

I just got off of the phone with an old 7000 tractor mechanic and he said the old maroon belly 7000 tractor was a dry clutch gear drive and the newer black belly was a powershift wet clutch tractor with a torque limiter so he agreed to watch the oil leak out the bell housing. Just had to add that one, CT

The mechanic is confusing the 7000 tractor and the 7000 series tractors. The model 7000 did not have a powershift. Also, not all the 7000 series tractors had powershift, some were power director like the 7000 models.

OK Joe, there is some confusion here the maroon belly 7000 tractors were gear drive and the black belly tactors were all powershift that I do know and also when I ordered them new there was no gear option after 1978 but if you a have true geardrive black belly 7000 tractor with matching serial numbers you better hang on to it but I'm not saying there weren't any because sometimes companies finish out runs with the old parts and break the serial numbers at that time it's a bean counter thing and it's all about the money and those guys never think about the future its always today.

I have to disagree with the statment that all black belly 7000's were power shift.

OK Joe, no problem, point well taken. I'm the kind of guy that if I bet on the instant replay I would lose like I've always said before too many years have gone by to bet on what I think is a sure thing. Anyway the point I was really trying to make was there is a definite difference between the black and maroon belly 7000 tractor enough in fact to affect the purchase price. I'm not trying to start an argument that's for sure. Have a nice day. CT

The the 7000 was made from 1975 thru 1981 and was replaced by the 7010 it would be good to know the serial number or at least if it has maroon trim or black which was changed around 1978 or 1979 the serial number is better because someone could have painted over the maroon. The serial number should be stamped on top of the pto housing. The 7000 has the rearend of an improved 200 with a 12spd powershift only transmission. I would look for oil dripping from bell housing indicating an engine seal leak but I don't think the 7000 or the powershift tractors had torque limiters which plaqued the bigger 7000 series tractors. With that said the tractor made a very agile 100hp tractor with a turbocharged 301 non intercooled diesel which had been the workhorse of the 7000 series tractor engines and very fuel efficient.CT
