I have a IB Allis Chalmers on 6 volts that I would like to change to 12 volts. The charging system is working with a cut-out on the generator instead of a voltage reg.The local parts store does not show a 12 volt cut- out Will I burn up the 6 volt cut-out by connecting a 12 volt battery to it.

Forget about the regulator and generator, don't need them. Get an alternator for a 1974 Chevrolet, I think about 40 amps with a built in regulator, and a diode (a dash warning light) works very well. Alternator number 7127. Get instructions from this site and you are good to go.

If you insist on converting to 12 volts (with a used/rebuilt 12 volt genny or have your own rebuilt to 12) why not go all the way and do it right and use a full fledged Voltage Regulator instead of the old Cutout Relay system????? The alternative is an alternator but again with the right one no more external voltage regulators or light switch connections for charge regulation. Dont forget necessary ignition changes if its a coil ignition and polarity reversal issues, post back if you have questions

or buy a 12 volt regulator and mount it below the gas tank inside the sheetmetal wraparound. i made a bracket the is part of the width straps under the tank and bolts to the sheetmetal.

A genny shop can rebuild your generator into a 12 volt neg ground unit, and there are 12 cutouts available that are no bigger than the 6v, so they look original.

I use the one wire setup. It's a GM alternator with a self exciting regulator. No cutout needed and has only one wire.Easy to hook up and as reliable and any. Some guys don't think too much of these but I'm running four of rhem and couldn't be happier.

Cutouts ARE voltage sensitive, and you WILL fry a 6-Volt unit with a 12-volt generator.

The "car hobby" guys are using a gutted-out cutout with a diode installed inside.

You can find instructions on the 'net on making your own, or some of the outfits catering to the "old car folks" have them for sale.

Also, I'll look in the Standard Ignition catlog tomorrow to see what's available in a 12-Volt cutout.
