Replace clutch

I have a 1949 B AC. I split the tractor to replace the clutch and when I rolled the motor away the input shaft (Clutch shaft in AC-11 manual) came with it. I saw it and stopped it from coming any further, and it seemed to go right back in and in its place. Is this normal for this shaft to slide out this way?

I have just started restoring this tractor and will no doubt need your help in several areas.
Thank you and hope my questions are not stupid.

I have used this forum to restorn a Ford 8N, and without it I could not have done it, and I'm sure the AC side will be just as helpful.

You are missing the little girl down in the center of the picture between the torque tube and the transmission. She has came out for what ever reason. Needs to be in so it can not work back on the splined stub shaft and the end of the drive shaft does not come out of the pilot bearing. third party image

I just rebuilt my first Allis Chalmers (and first tractor ever). It is a model C, but I think the situation is the same. When I split it, the shaft came with the motor. It cant come all the way out because there is a bearing in the torque tube.

I just put the engine on the cherry picker, and the rest of the tractor on jack stands, then I gave the engine a little push forward while holding the shaft and it slid right off the spline. Be careful not to cock the engine in relation to the rest of the tractor, or you will bend the shaft.

To make it easier to put back together, I put the shaft back into the spline on the clutch, and slid the engine back into place. There is a sleeve on the other end of the shaft that must mate up with the transmission. This was difficult to get into place, so I unscrewed the steering wheel post and I could see this connection.

Good luck
