Having starter problem I think. tractor quit turning over, I took starter out brushes pretty worn so I replaced them. Starter spins fine untill you put it in the tractor. If I pull the plugs out it turns the motor over easy, if I leave three plugs out and put one plug in any cylinder it stops turning over when it gets to the compression stroke. The motor turns over by hand normally ( no excessive resistance). Any thoughts?

I would first to a draw test on the battery for starters and see what kind of shape your power supply is in. If the battery checks out okay for service, more than likely, the starter arm has an open or two in it. 10 out of 10 starters that come in our shop for repair, need and get rewound arms put in them. If the arm is bad, you'll loose all torque from the unit to engage the drive assy. and spin the engine. Make sure all connections are free,and clear of corrosion and rust...

Thanks for the replys. I don't really know at what point the bushing are worn out. their doesn't seem to be excessive slop and I can spin the armature by hand using the gear that enguages the flywheel and doesn't seem to drag on the field winding. I have sinnce unsoldered the field winding and removed them and cut insulation off to see if their is a short in winding. prior to that I megged the winding to ground it showed o.k. I reinsulated field with glass tape and installed it. Put starter back to gether, same thing wont turn engingine over when spark plugs are in, motor turns over easly when plugs are out. I took starter button off and took heavy duty jumper cables and grounded directly to starter and jumped 12 volts from my truck battery to starter no differance. checked all electrical conections inside starter. I have acess to a lathe at work I guess I will take armature and turn down commutator and see if that fixes it.Thanks again for the replys, if you think thier is anything else I should try please post.

Just what shape is the battery in??? Try a jump and/or a known good substitute battery n see if she has more cranking torque. If shes still a weak cranker and you already did as the good gents posted below (good n clean cables n connections n grounds may well be the problem) does she get real hot when you crank???? If she heats up then Id suspect what Old was talkin about that the armature is dragging the field poles due to worn bushings. If thats the case the armature n field poles will show that real easy from looking. If its not bad bushings or brushes or cables or conenctions, then Id FINALLY be thinking armature and/or commutator problems.

The first thing is the most likely - poor cables. The second is a poor starter ground and poor connections. The least likely is the starter itself.

Battery posts and cables need to be clean. You must also assure that the starter is getting a good ground.

Under sized battery cables, poor battery, poor battery cable connections , poor ground, dirty or poor starter switch.

Bad bushings in the starter which you cause it to drag and if you keep tring to use it also will destroy the armature because it will hit on the sides of the houseing
