If your only doing 20 acres, it wouldn't seem that the synthetic experiment is not worth the risk. If you have a new tractor, it may be worth the risk - the tractor company may have done the experiment and could give you results. But on a 50 year old with limited knowledge of its lubricant history, leaks are going to be a major concern. Once a leak starts, going back to the former lubricant type will probably not stop the leak. Engine: probably OK if the engine has always had high detergent oil. Don't know about the impact to the seals. Power Steering: Allis has high shear pumps that will foam like crazy if they get a hint of detergent. I'd stick with standard 30W non detergent or, some use hydraulic oil (about 20W) with good success. Motor oil cannot be used in power steering. Power Director: 20 non detergent- don't know if foaming would be a problem. Hydraulic: Foaming issue and leaks. Final drives: I think Allis recommends 90W. I like 85W140. 10W30 (synthetic or not) is totally too light and inadequate. Belt Pulley: It is lubricated from the hydraulics. If you should try this experiment, please report back with short and long term results.
