AC 185 hydrolic problems?

I just purchased an AC 185 from an 83 year old retired farmer 2 weeks ago. I'm as green as they come. I didn't grow up on a farm and the only thing I know about tractors is that they look cool in parades. Apparently I'm about to get a crash course, because I can't get my bucket & 3 point to raise. I was able to lower the 3 point, but now it won't come back up. Additionally, I've gently tried driving the tractor forward and backward with very little result. Do hydrolics assist in this operation? There are a few spots leaking minor fluid, but the fluid level looks OK. Any suggestions on how I should start to figure this out would be greatly appreciated.

Gary - it sounds like your hydraulic pump lost prime. Does the power steering work as it also runs off the hydraulic pump. The hi/low power director clutch on a 185 is also hydraulic and needs pressure to engage and move the tractor. That is why the tractor will roll when off, even if in gear and you must lock the brakes when you park.

First check the fluid level which should be the dipstick with the hex head just ahead and to the left of the gearshift lever when siting in the seat. Fill it with universal trans/hydraulic fluid (look for 821XL AGCO spec) if it needs any.

Once you are sure it has plenty of fluid, try turn the steering wheel back and forth lock to lock several times. If it is not working it will be hard to turn manually. Whenever I drain my 180 and refill the hydraulics, mine loses prime and the hydraulic lift and power director won"t work but doing the steering wheel turning gets the pump to prime everytime. Others have had to remove the sump/suction hose to the hydraulic pump and put fluid in that way to reprime.

If your power steering works fine but the rest doesn"t, sounds like the problem may be somewhere else like a pressure relief valve sticking open or possibly even a pump problem.

Try this and post back. Mike

Mike,
Thanks very much for the fast and extremely well articulated advice. I bled some air out of the line just before the power steering pump and added more oil. It worked fine for 2 days. Last night it started idling poorly and killed. I got it started and drove a ways, but it killed again and I lost power steering. I was going to try to bleed it again, but maybe I'm not bleeding it correctly? Or is this maybe a bigger problem, since I didn't have any idling problems the last time?
