wd45 final hand clutch adjustment

How do I adjust the hand clutch. The manual says that the lever should be foreward to engage. On mine - it is engaged when pulled back and locked into position and I have to physically push and hold it all the way foreward (towards the front of the tractor) to dis-ingage it. The foot clutch works fine - its only the hand clutch that I"m having problems with.

Pat, I'm thinking something is missing here. As you describe it, your clutch is working the way it was designed. It isn't often that these clutches need adjustment - in fact, it is rare. Unless it is slipping, I wouldn't touch it.

Thanks for the info. By the way you have some great pictures posted. I think you have me headed in the right direction. My Dad (who is no longer with us) replaced the clutch plates and I'm thinking, from the info you gave me, that he probably did not replace the correct shims. I live about 300 miles from the old farm and won't get back for about a month. Thank you so much for the info and the pictures.

Pat, I haven't put any tractor pictures on YT for about 8 years - can't even remember what I put out there. I've had 25 tractors all looking like those that you have seen and still have 16 - working on three of them. I appreciate the comments. Maybe I should put a couple out there that are more recent.

See the link for pics of your hand clutch. You get to it by removing the battery, battery tray and cover plate below that. While the hand clutch is disengaged, you should be able to fit a 0.065" feeler gauge or bit between one pair of plates of your choosing. If much more, you get slippage. If much less, you are locked up, as you seem to be. Your solution would be to add the necessary number of brass shims at each of the three locations around the clutch pack in order to achieve the specified clearance all around.

There is also an adjustable link yoke at the bottom of the hand lever that governs where the handle will rest. Slop also develops in the link pins and at the hand lever pivot pin. All of these can allow the handle to flop.

But, if your clutch doesn't snap open and closed, you probably need to look inside the transmission clutch compartment. This compartment should also be filled to the filler holes with 80W90 oil.

The handle is to the rear when engaged, not forward. Engaged means it is in working position. Don't know what your 'manual' is, but engaged is working position. As far as adjustment, that is done by removing the battery box and adding/removing shims on the three carriers underneath the clutch cover. Adjust (take out as it wears) equal amount of shims in each of the three positions until you get a definate 'snap' when pulling the clutch lever to the rear.

Thanks for the info - The clutch does have a definite snap when pulling the clutch lever to the rear and the clutch engages OK. But when I release the lever towards the front, the clutch does not fully disingage unless I keep pressure on it by pushing it and holding it as far to the front as possible. If I do not keep pushing on the lever the clutch tries to engage. Does this mean that someone has not replaced the correct shims in the clutch. If so - where can I get the shims?

I would suggest looking at your clutch pack. If a previous owner has removed the shims in order to compensate for worn out clutch plates, you will be in the market for a good used clutch pack which will have what you need.
