Hello;

Along with another post.....

My D-17 came to me with the negative post going to ground. Is this that way to go to have the original generator VR work correct?

Trying ot figure out what is what..

The generator is capable of charging regardless if the batery is wired Pos or Neg ground provided you first Polarize it. If you swap battery polarity one needs to also reverse the ammeter leads (if equipped) or it reads bass ackwards and on a gas engine with a battery powered coil ignition the coils polarity should also match the battery polarity i.e. if at Neg ground - wires to distributor but + if at Pos ground.

one thing you can do is put a jumper wire from the "F" terminal of the generator directly to ground on the tracotor an dsee if the amp meter starts working. regulator may be faulty, or you migh tnot be grounded good on the regulator mount. clean the rust off the mounting bolts. if you have a volt meter, put it across the "F" and "A" terminals on the generator when running and see what that does. you can polarize the system by taking a smort jumper and touching the "B" of the regulator to the "G" of the regulator for 1 second with the key on, and the motor off, just before starting the tractor.

original D17 ws positive ground. It can work negative ground, according to the generator, battery, and distributor. the only problem would be the voltage regulator. some will work + or - ground, others are not that universal. if it is the original VR, i dont think it was setup to work - ground.
