I have a 190 with the shift pattern 3/5 and 4/6 gears. I broke a tooth in the pinion gear and found that it is around 400.00 dollars for a used set. I found a brand new ring and pinion on ebay for 70.00. The thing is, it is a set for a D19. Just wondering if it will fit the 190. I havent had the tractor apart to actually see what it looks like but I do know it is missing a tooth.

Early 190XT's had shift pattern 3/5 and 4/6. Drive train was too light for the HP. Dad had a '65 XT that either transmission or rear end failed (can't remember which)from pulling 5-16's. It was out of warranty but AC fixed it free and when we got it back the shift pattern was changed to 3/4 and 5/6. Have seen them both ways but later ones all seem to have 3/4 and 5/6. Don't know if this helps.

I read a thread that the earlier series had a shift pattern that is 1-2,3-5,4-6,7-8. And the later series the gears were all in order. I am just wondering if what I have has the same rear as the D-19.

A lot depends on what series 190 you have. There are 2 differant ring and pinion sets.
I'm not sure if the D19 one is the same. I don't have a parts book for one.
I don't understand the part about "shift pattern 3/5 and 4/6 gears".

Tractor is 8 speed but the stick shift is 4 speed with Power Director giving it another 4 speeds.1st gear (with the stick) and using the power director in low range is 1st speed and high is 2nd speed. 2nd gear using the PD in low is 3 and high is 5. 3rd gear using the PD in low is 4 and high is 6. 4th gear using PD in low is 7 and high is 8. In the later series 2nd low is 3 and high is 4 while 3rd low is 5 and high is 6. I'm glad there were only 8 speeds. Should we talk 7000 series with 20 speed using stick, PD and range shift? ;-)

My 190's gears are 1-2 with the main transmission in 1st, 3-4 in 2nd, 5-6 in 3rd and 7-8 in 4th. The sequence is what did not make sense to me. Mine is a series III though.
