I recently purchased a WD Diesel with a a fuel issue. As I know very little about them I am looking for some advice. When I bought it the guy said it ran fine (famous Last Words). We he brought it to my home I learned of an issue I was not aware of at the time. He stated the injectors just needed to be tested and most likely cleaned and it would be fine. Well the injectors have been tested and they are fine and I have not put them back in yet. The issue is when you get the tractor running it smokes like a chimmney and raw fuel runs out the exhaust pipe. If you spray a little Ether towards the intake it smooths right out and runs fine. The guy I bought it from stated he had the injector pump rebuilt and it was ok as well. I have been told it could be a compression issue,or timing or injector pump issue. This is were I need some advice, can anyone help me? Do you have a Wrench and are willing to travel to Northern Indiana? A little humor there! Any advice is greatly appreciated!!!

With the pump being rebuilt Id suspect that its not timed right, I once pulled a pump off a 3408 Cat to put a new seal in it, marked the teeth and never turned the engine a bit, when I put it back in it was way down on power and smoked like heck. Had to buy a timing tool from Cat to get it right, the thing couldnt have been more than 1 tooth off but it made a huge difference in the way it ran.

if the pump was out, and installed 180 degrees out, it will inject on the exaust stroke, and blow out fuel. lots of fuel. it will run, as some is left and ignites when compressed. won't make any power, and it'll have fuel running everywhere. sounds funny, but i saw a guy do it on a 190xt.

ohio, I'm not sure if I was involved in the same 190XT incident of which you speak but our service tech did put the fuel pump back in 180 degrees out of time I came in on a Sunday so as not upset our service guy and corrected it after talking to an old Case mechanic who recently passed on unfortunately (a lot of knowledge gone forever)I described the symptoms to him which by the way were the same as persian paul's. I reset the timing to the book which I think was 22degrees and hit the starter the old girl lit right off and ran as smooth as glass and probably was one of the best running 190's in the county. If I remember right it came back to our shop on a trade-in found another AC dealer turned it up for the guy they wound up bending the pto shaft on the tractor with the dyno at 147hp he said they didn't know how much hp it had.

This sounds alot like my issue. When we unloaded the tractor it had one bad rear tire and it was hardly moveable so didn't have a chance to give it much trottle. As I have the injectors out, I am going to test each cylinder for compression with a homemade tester made out of an old injector just to check that theory out! It sounds crazy but the darn tractor is in such good shape metal wise and stuff I think it would be a waste to trash it!

Is the smoke white? If so check injector pump timing. It may be late.

Have you looked at the energy cells? If they are all plugged up, you can get very incomplete combustion. And the reason ether makes it smooth out is that it picks up just a little speed and the injection pump cuts down on the fuel volume.
You could also throw some LP-gas in the manifold which would would do the same thing, but not be as hard on the engine.
When I pulled my Oliver 88 Diesel I ran a little LP tank directly into the manifold for a little more power. It basically used up all the air that the diesel fuel didn't; same effect as overfueling, but without all the black smoke.
Getting off the subject, but anyway, I would check the energy cells, which you probably know are located across the cylinder head from the injection nozzle.

Yes I have read that as well and have not got that far. Want to return back to the tractor project but the mosquitos are so bad here can't be outside for more than 15 minutes!!!!!

Could be a few things. If the injector pump was rebuilt and turned up to much that would cause that type of problem. Or it could be it just plain needs to be worked hard, very hard. Diesel if not worked hard will do some funny things. Of course it could also be low compression or other engine problems also
