Pto and hand brake

Bought a used A/C D-17. Neither PTO or hand clutch works. Are these related? I disassembled the bottom and found small shaft with bad bearing. I need to replace but I cant get the tractor apart. Have all the bolts out but something is holding it.
I cant figure how to remove the unit that the hand brake lever operates. Any help?

In order to split the D17 between the transmission and the torque tube, you need to remove the hand clutch control shaft from the torque tube. To remove the shaft, look on the left side of the torque tube and remove the snap ring from the left end of the hand clutch shaft. You may have to remove the cover from the left side of the transmission in order to see the snap ring. After you remove the snap ring, go to the right side and pull the shaft and lever out of the torque tube. The tractor will now come apart. I hope that this helps. Gordon

Thanks Gordon. That sounds exactly like whats holding me up. Just to be clear, is the snap ring on the outside of the tractor? I'll look tomorrow and give it a shot.

I can't help with the splitting but I do know that the hand clutch IS the PTO clutch. So, I'd say your problems are related. Good luck with the split. Do you have an I&T book or service manual? Those offer lots of advice and may tell how to split.
