190XT shifting woes

I have a 190XT that has become difficult to shift. When the tractor is in neutral and you push in the clutch to shift into gear, the gears don't stop spinning and you can't shift without either excessively raking the gears or shutting off the engine. If you are already in gear and stop to shift to another one, if you don't do it quickly the gears will spin up and you can't get it in gear again. I was told it may have something to do with the high/low range selector but that person didn't seem too confident. Any ideas? Thanks.

I haven't gotten back to the tractor to check things out but what you guys said does make sense. I don't remember the clutch pedal feel changing enough to notice but I do remember hearing a growling noise from that area sometimes when you let off the clutch. I would think a bad throwout bearing would growl when the clutch is pushed in though, right? There is a big factory hole in the bottom of the torque tube, big enough to fit your hand in, I don't suppose something could be done from there? I hate to think about breaking the tractor in half since this tractor just doesn't get used that much.

Xt, we had the same problem a couple of years ago. All of a sudden, one day we couldn't shift gears. We took it to the dealer, but if I remember correctly, the throw out bearing was bad. Also he had to get another clutch arm as the old one was bad. I think he couldn't get a new one so they got us a good used one. I see the non painted used arm every time I get on the tractor. They also put in a new clutch and I think pressure plate. Every thing works great now. Before the fix, it was just like yours, couldn't shift gears without lots of grinding.

Sounds to me like your clutch may not be disengaging completely for some reason. Could be the pedal out of adjustment from wear, or worn throwout bearing, worn/bent/broken throwout fork etc.

When you depress the foot clutch, does there seem to be more free play than usual before you meet resistance?

My D19 actually shifts in and out of gear easier with the power director lever in neutral.
