Torque Tube on a WD

My step father has lost some teeth on the intermediate gear that runs the PTO. If he found a used torque tube with good parts in it from a WD45, would the assembly from the 45 bolt up and fit in his WD. He has already removed the PTO drive from the belly of the tractor. When he reaches up in the tractor, he said the intermediate drive gear spins freely. We thought it might be cheaper to just get the whole assembly from a parts tractor. B. Jones

From your description, it is hard to tell if just the intermediate gear got wiped out, or if it took the PTO drive gear with it. I recently had to rebuild my PTO driveline when I ruined it while brush hogging with a grade 5 shear bolt. I lost a couple of teeth from the sliding gear and idler gear in the PTO box, which cleaned the intermediate gear right off. However, I was lucky in that the drive gear was undamaged. This would best be inspected by pulling the cover off the transmission clutch (hand clutch) housing under the battery. If it is in good shape, the intermediate gear can be replaced without splitting the tractor. To me this is much easier than splitting the tractor to replace the torque tube.

When I was shopping for a used intermediate gear it did not sound like there was a difference between the gear in the WD or the WD45, but I don't have the parts manuals to confirm that. You might find a used torque tube cheaper than individual components, but make sure that the gear(s) that you need is(are) in good shape.
