What is the small piece of felt for inside the back of the crank? We are rebuilding this 1952 CA and bought a new engine kit, but not sure what the small piece of felt is for inside the old crank.

It is to let a very small amount oil seep thru to lube the pilot bushing and yet not allow enough oil to get thru to mess up the clutch.

Dick, how do I know how big of a piece to put back in? I don't have the old one, and will any felt be ok or is there something special about it?

You should be able to find one at NAPA. If not the AGCO dealer will get or order one for you. They are fun to put back in by the way. I had the engine shop that grinds my crankshafts put in new ones,if needed, when they grind the crankshaft.

I bought another crank that is already ground. All parts here and ready for assembly. I bought the parts from this site as kit and the crank from elsewhere. When I go to NAPA do I ask for something inparticular or simply felt for the crank?

They can look it up in there farm tractor parts book but it might help if you ask for a felt wick for your crankshaft. We had people for years at our local NAPA that know what you were talking about even if you didnt know the exact name of the part you wanted. Some of the new ones now dont have a clue unless you have a part number.

I can and I would think you could but I have read posts where people have not had good luck. It is not like putting in a new shoe lace. You will have to pull it thru not push it.

My manual says to never pull it through but to push it in from the back side until it's even with the front, and no more than 1/8 inch hanging out the back. I hope this is correct in the manual.

I guess I have done it wrong. Do it the way the manual says. Dont say any bad words, it doesnt help. It does have to be packed in tight.

You will figure it out before your done.
