Allis Chalmers B Mag Timing

I have a AC B tractor with ignition trouble. It runs very rough and I suspect mag timing is incorrect. I've heard conflicting methods of timing this tractor, and location of timing mark on flywheel. Can anyone help? Thanks

Hi Dick,

I thought it might be useful since there seems to always to be a lot of confusion as to which timing mark to use. Some would say one and others would say the other one. Course if you know everything is correctly timed in the engine and also internal to the mag, you don't need to use either one. But it's best to work step-by-step and follow the book to be sure everything is correct. I can't say I have ever noticed anyone saying you could use either mark, depending on how you do it - therefore the web page. And it's sort of fun to do, as you know from all your helpful photos you post or link to.

One thing I should have done but didn't was show a picture of the drive gear tang recesses when #1 is TDC. If I think of it, the next time I have the mag off I'll add that to the page.

Yup. I use both ways but I mainly use TDC. That was the way I was taught back in the 1950"s. All engines will run timed at TDC. Car Truck or tractor. They can be tuned from there if needed. Both way will get you to the exact same place. I am working on something new you might be interested in. When I am done I will give you a shout.

With tractor running, loosen the top and bottom bolts on the mag flange. Do not loosen to far, just enough so you can move the mag back and forth. Than try moving the mag one direction and than back the other direction to see if the "rough running" clears up. If you move it to far in either direction, you can kill the tractor off and will have to move it back to the original position to start. If moving it one direction clears up the rough running keep moving it that same direction until it starts running rough again. Your "timing" is going to be in the "middle" of where it runs rough when you turn the mag both directions but you do not want to set the mag right in the "middle" of that area. Find where that exact middle is and than turn it just a little bit beyond that.
