How do you get the old brake bands out?

They just slide right out the top! (:^D

If you hook a wire one one end to a chain and use a three foot bar to pry on the chain.

The first biggest problem in that the henge rusts and will not flex. The second big problem is that it builds up with oil and dirt and does not give the band the room it needs to slide out. The third thing is that it is not the easiest thing to come out if you have none of the first two problems.
I do a lot of digging and scraping along with a power washer to get as much of the gunk out as I can before trying to pull the band out. If I am going to strip the final drive casting down and put in all new seals I dont even try to pull the brake bands out. I press the pinion shaft off the brake drum and then the brake drum and brake band will come out the open end of the final drive together.

How do you get the pin out that is in the end of the brake band? Is there any problem in using heat? How many of the "B's" were made with only one knock out hole while some of them have two.

Dick, do you reline your bands or do you buy complete units already built? 15 years ago before all the big chain auto parts stores came into town almost all of them had a small machine shop, now you are lucky if they can find a 6 volt battery for you or cross reference a filter for you. T.J.

We put linings on our CA when we had it apart the one side came right out and the other was rusted up solid and was bent out of shape befor we got it out and the linings would not flex to the band and could not get it to straten out and thought it was close and the pads broke befor we got all the rivets in ended up puting a new band in and the hinge was lose and had alot of slop in it gesing it avoid the rust up solid problem but the pads worked grate on the strate side
