how to tell wd trans to wd 45 trans???

Hey I read somewhere that the wd older transmission had a straight upwards shifter meanwhile the later wds had a curved one and the wd45s shared the curved shifters?..is that correct...we have a wd45 with a straight shifter but after all it may not even be one after all...I never check the serial number or nothing...just was wondering...thanks

Some one repainted it in the past,got Decals from TSC, maybe and as WD and WD45 Decals are both in the Decal Kit put Wd45 Decals on your WD. WD 45 had a Curved Shifter and the WD had a Straight Shifter and the Engine had a Push rod Inspection Plate on the right side of the engine Block. I had a WD45 D once and the engine went some where so I took the engine out of an old WD we quit using because it Steered to hard and put it into the WD45 D Chassis. Put it up for sale and the first people to look at it right away spotted the Inspection Plate and really made a fuss.Long story -short- I traded it to a Scalper for a Corn Picker and felt I got the best of the deal but I am sure he was laughing to him self as he left the yard with that sorry old WD45D with a Wd Motor .JC

You are correct. The last WD's built did have a curved shifter transmission before they switched over to the 45 engine and designation. The 45 transmission is a "synchronized" transmission and is supposed to shift easier than the straight shifter transmisson of the WD. This has to do with how the gears are cut. Check your serial number for sure to see what it says. Old is also correct in that the engines could be swapped back and forth. The 45 engine does not have the plate on the side. They could also put 45 pistons etc in a tall head WD engine but the only way to make it put out the same horses as the 45 would be to switch the air cleaner, carb and govenor springs as these were all different between the 45 and WD.

The constant mesh transmission is not synchronized. It has angle cut gears instead of straight cut gears- that makes it shift easier. No synchro's in 1952. New style transmission in 1952 at #127008, WD45 started in 1953 at #146607.

I perfer the older transmission and the real difference in the WD and WD45 is the 45 has a longer stroke and a bigger carb, and the only way to tell for sure which engine you have is to measure the stroke as either crank can be put in either block style.

Stright shifter means its a WD tranny. Now you could have a WD45 engine since they will bolt right into a WD tractor or the other way around. One way to tell if it has a WD or WD45 engine is to look on the right side of the engine. If it has a bolt on plate on the engine then its a WD engine also since the WD45 does not have that plate. Or in other words you may have been sold a WD tractor but told it was a WD45 since to most people they look the same unless you know what to look for on them
