About a year agao I acquired a '37 WC that looked pretty straight, good sheet metal, great radiator, no plow lever dents in the fenders, a very restorable looking tractor! It just didn't run very well, a slight miss, maybe cross firing a little, not a problem. I knew the brake drums, axel seals and hub seals had to be replaced just due to old age and wear and tear. All done. Now the engine. Bearly would run even after rebuilding the carb, replacing the rusted out manifold, magneto, clogged gas line. It's so amazing that fixing so many problems didn't fix the problem! It still didn't run worth spit. A compression test shows 30lbs on all cylinders except #4 which has 95. Removed the head and discovered aluminum pistons (in a 37?), these pistons are so loose in the cylinders that you ca see the rings . A 0025 feeler guage will slip right down beside the piston to the ring. Number one cylinder has apperently swallowed a valve some time from the deep scaring in the top of the piston, number three had deep grooves in the walls from an out of control wrist pin. And when these aluminum pistons were installed the old ring groove was not removed and the compression ring on the aluminum pison is about a half inch above the old ring groove, imagine the stress on the compression ring. The rocker arms were another sight, two different ventages plus one had broken and been brazed back together. Guess it worked back in the day. Just having fun, Harry Case,Allis,Moline nut
