irratic charging on D-14

Have a D-14 positive ground system. New generator, belt and voltage regulator put in last year. Now the guage reads plus 1 for about a minute then reads minus 11 for about a minute, then back to plus 2 and so on. Keeps going back and forth. Putting the lights on doesn"t seem to make much difference. So far hasn"t drained the battery. Any ideas what would cause the charging to go back and forth. I am thinking defective voltage regulator.

Sounds like the VR is searching for a ground. Make sure the VR is grounded correctly, clean up it's mounting area and see what it does...

I would polish the points with a thin REGULATOR POINT FILE or better yet a (FLEXSTONE) made by (RIMAC) tool in the 120 grit P/N #2.This will file and polish them to look like chrome.DO NOT ADJUST anything as it will fall right back to where it was set to begin with.This will work with most old regulators as it sounds to me like that is your problem. I sanded and cleaned the ground and mounting bolts. Checked all the wires and screws for tightness. Filed the points, etc. Charges good for about 5 minutes and then jumps from back and forth again. Seems like this voltage regulator never did work right. I'm going to try a new one tommorrow.
