Hi,

I just purchase a 1980 AC5020 (with 4X4), great little tractor but turning is a shore (specifically wit a full load on the loader), does any one know or have information on a power steering solution that can be added?

Thanks in advance,

Juan

This must have been a common problem on 5020's, because at a dealer auction a couple of years ago I picked up a few of the p.s install kits that Allis was selling. I may have some of the parts you need, I'll have to check, as I have been robbing these kits for hyd parts for years now.

Dave, sounds great I'm not where Jaun is with a working tractor yet because mine is gutted on the shop floor and don't plan to put a loader on it at this point so Juan has first dibs so let me know if you have parts left over I might be interested. CT

Good input, I have just started looking around and investigating. I will update the group as I find a solution. I send off for some information on a power steering kit, from the intial information it looks like a good solution.

Thanks,

Juan

I'm presently totally restoring one and I noticed the hydraulic pump is awful small so I don't know if it would handle much and I was suprised that Dick L mentioned a backhoe but I do know they are rated for a loader. One thing I can tell you is any power steering will usually require a priority valve otherwise everytime you raise the loader while your moving the steering might get sluggish. Even the combine PS has a priority valve with it.Basically as I understand it this valve is right after the pump and evrything the pump puts out the valve gets it first and it bypasses a lot so it will need tunning and of course bypassing oil causes it to heat up which will require an oil cooler. Just my thoughts but someone on here is probably more schooled than me or there experience level is higher. Good Luck and keep me posted because I'd like to do that myself. CT

Look on the right side under the seat. You will see a block that is held in place with three bolts. To hook up a loader you remove that block/cover and place a special block under that cover. That block is drilled and taped for a pressure line and a return line. This block came with the loader. I used the loader and a blade at the same time and I never had a sluggish problem.

I did not install a backhoe on it. I bought a backhoe. The backhoe was a 580 Case. At that time I did not need the loader on the small tractor.

I have three Gleaner E Combines and have had them for years.

Dick L, I stand corrected, sorry about that but I was referring to the newer generation Gleaners that use the main Hyd. pump to power the steering instead of a belt drive from the crankshaft so I guess if you have a belt drive including its own resevoir it's not a problem. That's why I put in a disclaimer because I haven't been around it for many years.
Additionally a backhoe I know takes a lot of gpm unlike the 3pth because the cylinders require a lot of volume in a hurry which I'm guessing you wouldn't be using the steering while operating the hoe I'm just questioning the gpm of that pump to handle the volume. My pump has a stamp that says 1.0 GPM which is pretty weak.CT

I was going to use the power steering components from a Gleaner E combine on mine. Never got around to that project before I bought a backhoe and took the loader off. I was going to tap into the hydraulic block that the loader works off of rather than using the belt drive pump from the combine.
