is there any way to clean out the mesh inside the can? i have regularly cleaned the cup but the mesh is full of junk. can i pull it out or is it non-removable?

Depends on the gunk. If it's oil and dirt, soak in kero, diesel, mineral spirits, and then use brake cleaner to finish. If it's got grass in it (like my laen mowing B) then hot tank or fill with oven clenaer and put in garbage bag for a week. then use the brake cleaner when the chunks come out. Less than $20 to hot tank if someone has one nearby, or a 5 gal bucket and $5 of lye at Kroger.

It's a handy way to use up old gas that just doesn't seem to be doing the job anymore.

I always hot tank all the oil bath stuff on all my tractors. Makes the inside look like new. third party image

On my WD-45, there is a snap ring at the bottom of the filter housing. This lets the steel wool come out, I think.

Steam cleaner would be great, lacking that, hook a pressure washer to a hot water supply. Gets the grease out much better than cold water.

We used to cut the welds and remove the mesh, unroll it and wash it. Then tightly roll it back up around a piece of pipe the right size or slightly larger, push it back into the body and spot weld the retainer.

The way I have done it but now days costs a lot is to soak it in a bucket of gas.
