The ED-40 was a British built Allis Chalmers tractor. Terry Dean says that about 4000 were built with most of them remaining in Great Britain. The first year of manufacture was 1960 and the last was 1968. It was comparable to a Series I D-15 having initial horsepower of 37 and in 1963 it was increased to 41. It had the power director clutch with 8 forward speeds and two reverses. Rear tires were 11x28 which are more like WD size than either the D-14 or D-15 which were 26. The first ED-40's were imported in 1964. They were only available with a 4 cylinder, Standard Ricardo engine with a compression ratio of 20:1. The tractor weighed 3600# and had a Cat II 3-point hitch.

Never had one but I remember stories about them being really, really hard to start.

Allis was planning on selling a "B" size tractor in England. They built the ED40 using the basic design of the B, with Lucas electrics and a Perkins Diesel. They also imported some "B" kits from the Us. Later they updated the tractor and i think called it 272
