Just bought what I believe is a 1938 B sn B116XX, Great Deal, I think, $200, all there, engine locked, exhaust covered. Someone took off the nut that holds on a rear wheel, got it up on the trailer and the wheel fell of the tractor on the trailer on the way home... no big deal, just tightened up the chain... Does anyone know what size nut I would need? It looks like its about an inch and a half at least that's what the tape measure said, what is the thread pitch (is that what you call it?)?

Its a lot different than my 47 B, the front wheels look like they are rivited to the hubs, has hand brakes, and electric start is that origional? Some one at some point put a distributor, and a home made mount for the generator, it has a plate on the manifold with gap information... Maybe origional tires? 4.00x15 (4 or 5 rib) and 8-24 rears all but one front rotted so bad the tubes showed when I aired them up, but when I picked it up all the tubes held until loaded on the trailer! When the first rear tube blew out the side, I let the air out of all the other tires. Ok sorry to go on, just happy to have a new project! I'll post a pic tomorrow!

We found the nuts on our '39 'B' axles were beat up and since we are into working, using, instead of showing, we just bought some 1.5 inch nuts, fine thread, from a supply company. They work great and are much easier to tighten than the original style.

I am getting ready to paint a B that I have been working on for a while. Part of what I needed to do to the tractor was to replace the axle. I think I may have an extra nut that came with the replacement axle. If interested shoot me an e-mail. I am going on vacation for a week so I will not have a chance to get out to the tractor until after vacation. I do know that it is a 2 1/4 inch wrench to turn the nut.

Here's a link to a picture of it I just posted on this website. I plan on getting it running before I paint it. I was out looking at it this morning I think everything is there but that one lug nut.

Riveted wheels are early and rare. Some of the early ones were electric start. There should be a generator mounting boss on the engine block, uses old style Delco generator, small upper mount off exhaust manifold stud. Brackets are still available (I might even have a set when I convert to alternator). Distributor is probably CA, bolts right up, often done when mag fails since battery was already there for starting. Foot brakes were later, and realize the rails are different between them. Not unusual for hand brakes. Axle nut is 1 1/2 fine thread if I remember right. Usually they are beat to death, but as Dick points out, the same one is used inside to hold the bull gear to the axle.

Are you going to restore, make useable, or modify?

Make a trip too or call an Allis scrap yard. The nut on the outside is exactly the same as the one on the inside that holds the bull gear in place. I know Roger VanCamp has them with him at any show he attends. I dont remember the thread number at this time but it is a standard fine thread.
