Is there anywhere else you can look to determine what year by WC is besides the rear axle? The numbers on the axle are bad enough I can't read them.

The WC is the unstyled version if it helps any.
thanks

Hey tpohl You can certainly tell when the transmission housing was cast, assuming your tractor has the original , this should get you in the ball park anyway. It will be very obvious on the right hand side if you are facing the front of the tractor from the back. Also Bill, Jack, and Ed have very good advice. Good luck, Harry

You can place motor year if that is of any help - but as pointed out elsewhere, that could be not-original. Most of unstyled WC motors had s/n on aft end of block steel stamped into flat spot just below head - need to scrape off grease. It should start W + up to 5 digits and end G or K or HA. In general they are slightly higher than tractors - about +10 at beginning of 1935, +150 at beginning of 1936, +600 at beginning of 1937, +1700 at beginning of 1938 - all numbers are approximate as there was no order in assembly. Difference is probably power units and WF or W Maintainer, W Speed Patrol, etc. It gets worse after 1938, but if you give me a motor s/n I can get a pretty good guess for you. Best, Ed

Unstyled was built from 1934 to 1938. In 1936 the hood was changed with a curved corner added at front of hood where it meets the radiator on each side. If older they were square at that area. Also a screen was added in front of the radiator at that time and six bolt front wheels were used instead of spoked. Remeber all this could be swaped from another tractor so serial # is only real proof. Maybe check engine serial #.

My Dad's '36 WC had the squared off hood you mention and spoke wheels front and rear with rubber tires from the factory. My uncle had a '37 with the curved panel on the front side upper hood and disc wheels front and rear. I have seen combinations of wheels (disc front, spoke rear, etc) also some '36s with the curved hood panel. So there was a change over from spokes to discs and the addition of that little hood panel but it didn't coincide with any "model year change over". Allis used up existing stock until it was gone and didn't worry too much about year identification. The serial number is the best way to tell, assuming it still has the same rear axle/diff housing.

Yes it was some time in 1936 that these changes took place but that info should help narrow down the year of subject tractor at hand. Like I said the serial # is really the only sure way.

Well if unstyled its a 1939 or older if I remember right that is. One way to be able to read those numbers is to take spray carb cleaner and spray it on a rag and rubber the area real good, may take a few times doing that. Then take some white paint and brush it on the numbers and wipe it off with a clean rag. Doing that the paint stays in the numbers but wipes off the high area and most of the time you can read them after doing that

The serial number on the back is the only way i know of to date a WC. Are they bad because they are pitted or because they are filled in. Try taking a wire brush (an maybe some WD-40 or similar) to the area and see if that doesn't help clean them up. My parts WC was sitting outside for 40+ years and the serial number was still readable.
