Allis B timing issue

Still having issues with my B. I have replaced the carb with a rebuilt carb. I have had the valves completely re-done. Replaced the mag cover,points,condensor,rotor. This mag has been converted to a coil on the outside and condensor on the outside with holes drilled through the mag and wired to the inside. It is still running rough and I'm about ready to throw the towel in. There is a yellow mark on the flywheel. I have that lined to the inspection hole and have the line on the fiber gear straight down. Does anyone have any suggestions for me to make sure I have it properly timed. It starts but runs very rough and back fires off and on now.

pull the front spark plug. put your buddys finger over the hole and bar the motor over slowly untill he feels the pressure coming up. now take a curved coat hanger end and stick in the plug hole and SLOWLY turn the motor by hand and see the rod move up as the piston rises. when it gets to the top and stops rising, look in the timing hole for top dead center. this is when the mag will also "snap". listen for that also.

Hi Herb,

Dick L. is correct. You first need to confirm what the yellow mark signifies before proceeding. You can time a magneto-equipped B using either the TDC or the FIRE mark. You just need to use different procedures, depending on which mark you choose to use. This may help once you define that flywheel mark.

Thanks to everyone with all your fantastic suggestions and help.

Saturday I took these suggestions and got M Allis B running like it was brand new. I can not thank you all enough for all your help.

I enjoy working on the tractor a lot but that timing thing was just a stinker to get it right.

Theres a few things that could be wrong. Your mark as others have siad may not be the right place and or you could have the rotor drive gear in the mag off by one tooth forward or back and that will also cause some funny problems

Did you try timing by ear? Maybe your yellow mark is wrong.

What does it say under your yellow mark?? FIRE or TDC ??
