excessive oil pressure

Any suggestions as to why a recently overhauled engine ran fine for about five months of light to moderate regular use and then out of the blue start blowing the oil filter apart at the seams?

Hopefully the other folks are right about the problem being a relief spring stuck in closed position. I don't know that motor but usually the spring and associated valve or in the oil pump or located near the filter boss(like a Ford). Also, on some engines, if the cam bearings or not installed correctly the oil pressure can go thru the roof. That comes to mind because the engine was rebuilt recently. good luck.

It is a d17 allis, and I have tried many different types of filters. Look at my same posting under the general discussion forum for a full discription of the problem.

Well since I saw your other post I know its a D-17. I would say the oil pump relief valve is stuck. As to how to fix sorry I can't help on that

Maybe the relief valve in the pump is stuck closed.

Have you measured the oil pressure to see what the max pressure is? You may have a defective filter. Hal

Unsure... But first, have you changed the oil recently, and does it drip a noticable amount of oil when parked?
