what oil should i use in my d17 diesel? it gets fairly cold here in MA but i dont use it in the winter. i think the oil in it now is 15w40 and i think i want somthing thicker because if i work it hard and then chech the oil there's foam on the dipstick and the oil is real runny

D17man, Any oil rated for a diesel engine will provide protection for your engine, however you might want to use a straight sae30 or sae40 in the summer. Go to one of your local farm fuel suppliers and talk to them about your tractor. Most of these places have a man trained in oils and their different charactics. Some brands of oil foam more than others. Some brands have an anti foaming agent added to them. My series 4 caries 45 lbs pressure, but it has 5 hours on a complete overhaul. Do not be afraid to use an oil from your local farm coop,they spend thousands of dollars and many hours testing their products. If you want a brand name, the local Agco and J D dealer have a fine engine oil.

The guy is from MAssachusetts. Those kind of farm resources don"t exist in most of New England. 15W-40 should be fine, but I would also suspect water in the oil from what he describes.

D17 man, I'd still loosen the plug after it's cooled off. If any water has gotten into the pan, it will come out first - will even seep around the threads which the oil usually won't do. If you find any, check back here.

I run 20W50 in mine and it seems to work well - been using it for over 10 years. The oil should be DS rated for diesels. Mine turns over a little slow at 40 degrees but it starts and I don't use it until the engine temp has started to come up. If your engine doesn't get up to 170, you should consider a new thermostat. This engine will work better if it is at that temp.

What your talking about - bubbles - may be caused by the surface of the dipstick. If it has some cleaner or something on there, the oil might puddle on the dipstick. Most likely, it isn't doing that in the engine or you wouldn't be able to keep any oil pressure.

35 psi is a little low but I think it is ok. I think mine is around 40 when warmed up. Allis's didn't have real high oil pressure in the 50's and 60's.

My first impression by your comment is that you were getting water in your oil from the cooling system. My D-17 never has foam and it doesn't really get runny here in Texas where it is a lot hotter. Does your oil pressure remain constant as you warm up the engine or does it drop off? Pull the drain plug for the engine pan and see if the first little bit that comes out is water or oil. Is the oil coal black or brown or white?

I've never encountered foam in an engine so I'm a bit stumped.

well i guess i wouldnt really call it foam but just a few bubbles on the dipstick when its hot. when the motors warmed up the oil pressure is about 35 psi at almost full throttle
