Hey Old,

Any advice on putting a thermostat in a model C? I can't get the tractor up above 160f, so I think it's either missing its thermo or has a busted one.

You have a post in the archive about removing the housing bolts. That sounds scary. I suppose there is no safe way to remove those bolts? I would hate to have them break off.

What thermostat should I buy? Does NAPA have them?

Use heat on the casting at the threads and you will get them out. (Hot heat) If you use heat first you dont have to mess with broken bolts.

Dick, I've been putting off changeing a theromstat on my C because if being affraid of the bolts brakeing off. I'm thinking about running it till its good and warmed up and then tring to take them out. I guess your saying thats a good idea but also sounds like your saying that area need to be even hotter I'm I on the right track??

Yes sir: I use a burnzomatic torch with the yellow mapp tank for little jobs. I use the same torch to heat the lobes on the torque tube to remove the 1/4" screws that hold the tank support on, as well as many places first rather than last. Or after the bolt is broken. The heat expands the metal around the threads. You need to get it hot enough to remove the paint and then start trying to turn the bolt while still applying heat. When the heat soaks into the bolt they become the same size again. Dont put cold water on it. People get mixed up on the application of when and where you put cold water on things to remove stuck threads.

How hot should the C be getting, anyway? The hottest I've seen mine since putting the temp gauge on it was about 155-160f. The "green zone" on that gauge begins at 170f.

Any ideas on what thermostat to use?

I would not worry about it. I do not have a thermostat in any of mine. The one I use the most is the B I mow lawn with and it stays just under 150 most of the time. When I was pulling one of the first things I did was remove the thermostat. When every one was warming up there tractors before the pulls my tractors didnt get started. I pull on a cold engine. More lugging power on a cold engine. I am talking about summer time. The only cold weather pulls I went to I did warm them up enough that they would not sputter/falter. All the tractors I farmed with, when I was farming, I did use thermostats in. You do need a warm engine working 10 12 hour days but then only 180 degree thermostats on the pre 1960 engines.

I figure I'll just pull my thermostat out and not put in a new one, but I also have shutters on my C so there in really no need for one any how since I can open or close as needed to get the engine up to temp

in reply to something u said in the post about what an allis B will do, u sent me some pics of your front end lift, could u some me one or a few with the snow plow attached to your C. i want to put a SP on mine )snowplow not Snap coupler to be clear) and i would like to see how u did it. i have a wide front axle for mine, but need the time to get it on. not enough hours in the week sometimes eh?

Just drop me a e-mail and I'll see if I can get a few taken. That snow plow was really made for a truck but I figured out how to make it work on the C. Its probably to big for the C but it does look sort of neat sitting on it. Makes the C look a lot bigger. The plow is something like 7 foot wide and I found out that I needed a lot more weight on the back or it would go any place in the snow it would just spin so I added a 3 point to it you help with the weight problem
