Hello;

I lv0oe the great support I get from the good folks in this forum.

I have a 1963 D-17 Series III Allis, and it does smoke under load. I need to know from an experienced hand can I replace the liners and pistons WITHOUT splitting the tractor? Also, how often does the engine NEED to be taken down for a total rebuild. I ask as it starts right up .

Appreciate your advice.

  How do I.remove the snap coupler bell? in reply to DavidKittle, 07-29-2007 16:31:27
Hello;

I need to remove the snap coupler bell on my 63 D-17 serie III allis as I accidently " tapped" it and need to bend it into shape.
I have the lower pin (holding the hook)out okay, but the top one is STUBBORN. I am soaking with aerokroil, and try again tomorrow. But I am writing to find out suggestions that may help me out.

Thanks

Your note says it smokes when under load. You don't mention that it does otherwise. If the smoke is dark in color, you don't need a rebuild. If it only smokes under load, the smoke is usually dark to black. If so, your fuel mixture is too rich and you need to turn in the power jet a little - perhaps as much as a 1/2 turn.

Generally if the smoke is white, this is the burning of oil and a rebuild may be necessary. If your engine has low oil pressure and the pressure drops significantly when it is warmed up, the bearings and crankshaft will also require work.

I have rebuilt several Allis tractor engines in the frame. It is a lot easier to do with the engine out and on an engine stand but this requires a hoist to get it in and out. When I had good oil pressure and the crankshaft and bearings were in-spec, I just kept track of where things came from so they'd go back in the same spot. The rods and caps are usually marked. If they aren't, consistently mark them with one dot for one, two for two etc. The rods only go in one way but it isn't obvious - good reason for good marking.

Hello;

Is the "power jet" you mention the one that sets to the left of the carb, down, wiht a dog leg in it?

Precciate the help!

It depends on the carb. There are two adjustable needles. One is for idle and the other is for power. Your description sounds like the power one is out too far. It is usually either near the bottom of the carb or farther from the carb throat and on top. Sometimes they look like a bent wire - may be what you describe as a dog leg.

Yes it can be done, but my self I wouldn't because then your putting in new stuff on old stuff. Or in other words you can't do any thing to the crank shaft and after an engine has enough hours on it to need rings etc. it will also need to have the crank shaft checked and most likely turned and you can't take that out with out pulling the engine
