my d17 vi starts and runs perfectly until it has warmed up and put under a little power. then it cuts and and runs horribly. had a similiar problem before and beleive it was a coil? any thoughts appreciated..

My D17 was doing the exact same thing. It ran fine until I tried to put it under load. I changed plugs, wires, coil, points, etc.
Problem ended up being the adaptor from the fuel tank to the sediment bowl assembly was plugged with straw and rust. I replaced the assembly (tried cleaning the old one first and then it wouldn"t stop leaking) and it has worked great ever since.

I would go with coil too, to be sure pull the coil wire from the cap and hold near a good ground while someone makes an attempt to start the tractor. Need to do this asap before the coil cools. Hal

Good thought from garyh. My H Farmall drove me nuts for a year with the same problem. Turned out an after-market fuel cap with a built-in guage wasn't venting properly.

So--try running it with the fuel cap loose.

Yep a coil will cause that but also a glogged fuel system will cause that also. Does it ever die, if so when it dies check your spark, if you have no spark then most likely to be the coil.

Check your gas cap also, may have the vent plugged ! Usually a coil will fail completely,I had an old ford pickup that would get me about 6 miles from home and die, after an hour to cool down it would run fine again until the coil got hot , Took a while for me to figure that one out . Is your governor acting up? Or possibly a bad setup on the carb? Like not enough fuel to the engine.

I had almost the exact same problem with my D17 Series III... It would run fine until it was put under load and it would sputter and eventually stall, no matter how the throttle was set.

It turned out that the needle & seat were shot in the carb and was not stopping the flow of gas into the intake & it just couldn't burn it all off.

Check the level of oil in your crankcase - if it's high, can you smell if there's gas in the oil - if so, you probably need to change the needle & seat in the carb.

If you have a Marvel Schebler carb, there's lots of info online to setup those carbs after you clean it up & change the needle & seat.
