Sorry to be so late getting back to ya. Been away from the computer for a few days. You asked me about living near Winfield. I'm about 7 miles west of town. St. Johns is shut down now. Some of the buildings have been redone for community use. One of the dorms has been set up as an assisted living apartment. Some of the buildings are empty with windows broken out. Pretty sad to see. There is a gas and steam show coming up Aug. 17, 18 & 19. There's always a good turn out with lots to see.

The skating rink is currently called Interskate 77. It's at 515 Main Street. (Main is US77.) That's five blocks south of Island Park.

Ok another question about Winfield. ST. Johns was what was called first hill then on 2nd hill there was another college is it still there?? Also 3rd hill was an insane home for people with problems is it still used for that. Also between 2nd and 3rd hill was an oil field is it still an oil field?? An one more question. Just up the road from that college on 2nd hill was a big house made from red wood brick do you know if that house is still there?? My dad built it back in the early 60s??
Thanks

The other college is Southwestern College. It is still going strong. The insane place has been redone as a VA nursing home. There is still a place that has a bunch of oil field type stuff on the East edge of the first hill, but I don't know if there is any pumping activity. Not sure about the house either, but I will try to remember to take a look next time I'm in town. Do you remember what side of the street it was on?

Well back then there was a big hill come down from the college and at the bottom of the hill you could go left or right. If you went right it would then curve to the left and up about a 1/2 mile on the left is where the house was. At that time that road marked the city limits. The house was in the city but the farm on the other side of the road was out side the city limits. Back when I lived in winfield I went to the luthren school and walked to school from that house. Also is island park still there and is it still an island??

Yep the Island Park is still there. Every year there is a huge christmas light display there. A lot of the companies from around town sponsor them.

I forgot to mention that they tore out the swimming pool that was next to the entrance to Island Park and put in a new one across the street. I haven't been in there, but it looks quite a bit bigger.

Yah me too. It was a pretty big hang out for the kids. I haven't been in there in years though. As a matter of fact if I put on a pair of roller skates now I would probably hurt more than my pride.

Another question for you. Do they still use that water tank that was on the hill close to St johns college?? There was also a pond on the back side of that hill is it still there and open to the public. I caught a good number of fish from that pond years ago.

The water tank that I knew of is gone. There is now a big water tower in that area of town. I'm not sure about the pond. I know there is a creek that runs a little bit East of there.

Is winfield still a double dip city. At every street you get a double dip?? I rememeber almost all streets had a sort of double dip at each crossing or streets. Also there was one street that had very high curbs because it was made for flood control is that street still like that??

Yep there are still a lot of dips at intersections. The streets with the high curbs are still there. Bliss and Andrews. The city did a lot of work a couple of years ago to help with the street flooding on them. It's better, but the still flood some.

Is one of those streets still named Canal street. I know way back when I lived there, one street had that name because it had curbs about 2 foot high

Skateing and bikes go hand in hand. Once you learn you never forget. Found that out because I hadn't had skates on for 10 years or so and my kids want to go skating and I gave it a try and with in 15 minutes was skating back wards like I had been on them last saturday. I spent a lot of time on that oil field when I was a kid, thats also where I found out about skunks and how hard t is to get rid of the smell from one. Yep I got sprayed by one once not a fun thing to do
