Generator - ammeter questions on a WD

How do I check to see if an ammeter is working. Switch on or off running or not it doesn"t move.
I just had the generator rebuilt.

If an ammeter working (and wired correct????? ???) if you turn on lights or ignition when shes not running it should swing to - discharge. Then once started if wired correct n working PLUS the charging system works, it should swing to + charge.

The Supply side wires to the hot ungrounded battery post, often via a connection at the starter switch/solenoid, while its other Load terminal feeds lights n ignition PLUS wires to the BAT terminal on a Voltage Regulator or Cutout Relay. Unless its a bad open circuit, battery voltage should appear on BOTH its terminals.

Even if the needle were stuck/corroded and cant move, it can still allow current to pass through it provided its not bad/open. Therefore, if the charging system works at RPM battery voltage should rise from 6.3 to 6.5 to 7 volts on a 6 volt system and from 12.6 to 13 to 14 volts on a 12 volt system.

first test the generator. installed on tractor, jumper the "F" terminal to ground - tractor frame. leave the wire off the "G" terminal.. start tractor and put a hand held volt meter across the "G" and "F" terminals. you will get 12 volts on a 6 volt system and 24 volts on a 12 volt system if generator is good. when you connectt the "G" to the battery thru the regulaltor or cutout, then you get 1 volt above the battery voltage...amp meter dont go bad too ofter but possibly. check it with another ampmeter or use the voltmeter to verify flow.
