D17 Diesel - a FEW issues

I brought home a very original D17D (s/n 18751 or so) a few weeks back. With the help of some fellow listers, I was able to correct some wiring issues, had the starter & solenoid totally rebuilt like new ($165)and she starts just like a gas tractor, which is suprising. Here are my issues:

1) When I fire it up, it goes right to O or R in NORMAL on the oil pressure, but once warmed up (idle or road gear), it drops to the bottom of the gauge slowly. Any thoughts? I pulled the valve cover, and everything appears to be getting good oil flow on the topside. I have yet to pull the lower oil pan to inspect the pump & intake. Other than these two items, any other thougts? I do have a NAPA oil filter, which I know is not the best for proper backpressure....

2) It also seems to be missing at most every time, except under load, as in climbing a hill. It then at least sounds like it's running smoothly on all 6... I loosened the fuel lines to bleed any air, drained the old nasty diesel, cleaned the sediment bowl, replaced both fuel filters, and am running SeaFoam in both the engine oil and fuel. The engine oil (I have maybe 1-2 hours on it) is already black and nasty, so things must be gummy in there. I am wondering about the valve/lifters, and possibly injectors. Any other thoughts?

Thanks

when i rebuilt my 1958 d17 diesel and ran it for the first time, it had a miss and i thought it was the injectors, although they needed to be rebuild too. But i finally checked the rocker arms, and it just so happened that one of them was too tight and that was the problem. When i put the motor back together i had put them back in like they had come out, and hadnt checked them. I didnt touch timing and havent had a problem since.so check your rocker arms and if that doesnt do it, one of your injectors is probably dribbling instead of misting.hope i helped

The D175 diesel is the 4-cylinder version of the 226 that you have in that D17. One thing the miss could be is the cups (I can"t for the life of me remember the proper name) on the exhaust side of the engine, that the fuel sprays into and deflects back to the top of the cylinder. They are probably burned slightly on the edges. My rebuilt D175 in my HD3 crawler has a slight miss until you put a little load to it, then it straightens right out. It really doesn"t hurt a thing, and they are a real pain to pull, so I would just leave them alone and live with a little miss - if they are to blame. As far as the timing, they are a little tempermental. You may want to double-check it.

D17D has a 262 Buda 6 cylinder diesel...not a 226.

I can't comment on the oil pressure, except in most diesels, the new oil will normally turn black almost immediately.

I don't have a D17, but I do have a D19 diesel I put to work routinely, and as far as the engine miss goes, the D19 is very touchy on timing. A couple of years ago, my D19 developed kind of a flutter in the exhaust at 3/4 throttle and light load. Of course, the Service Manager at the local Agco dealer right away wanted to rebuild the injector pump for more than the tractor was worth.

I went home and checked the timing. It was off a bit, so I played with the timing and eliminated the problem. Also, dirty/worn injectors can act the same way.

Hope this helps.
