I've recently had problems with my starter spinning but not engaging. Took it apart and freed up the gear but now it won't spin at all. seem to have juice to it but pushing the switch on the starter simply yields a clicking sound where my ground (-) strap bolts to the frame. This is a 12-volt system. Any ideas? Thanks for the help.

I would try pulling the starter back from the fly wheel a couple inches and see if it turns when you hit the starter. Or you can pull it all the way out clamp it in a vice and apply 12 volts to it. If it still does not turn - If you had previously taken the cap off and pulled the armature out you may have cracked one of the carbon brushes or you may not have gotten the housing put back together correctly (cocked) - there are either 1 or 2 pins that should line up and go into mating holes on the other half of the housing. Your other problem - the armature spinning and not engaging. I had this problem - had the starter repaired at a shop twice and still had the same problem. I finally noticed that when the gear came back to the home position it would bind and hang up. I finnally went to the local hardware store and bought two off the shelf "C" rings and snapped them on the shaft behind the gear so it would stop before going all the way to the home position. It worked - I haven't had any problems in over 2 years now. Good luck.

Thank you to everyone for all the input. I'm out to disconnect, clean and tighten and will let you know what happens.

Dave, As typical Im in Olds camp on this one. That noise where you hear a clicking is a darn good place to start. Id remove, clean n wire brush n reattach each n every battery n ground n starter n switch cable connection. Then if in doubt Id have the battery load tested and insure its good and then fully charged. With a good battery and alllll ll good clean tight brigh cable connections as Old told ya, engage the start switch and if it has lights turns them on..... ..

If the lights dont dim down much when cranking it could be a starter problem ORRRRR the mechanical switch or the starter post under it (if a mechanical saddle mount push switch???) is bad or badly burned or carboned up.

If the lights dim wayyyyy y down Id suspect a bad starter (shorted or dragging armature, worn bushings). If they go all the way out Id suspect a really reALLY BAD SHORTED STARTER ARMATURE OR SHES MECHANICALLY STUCK/JAMMED or a connection is totally shot.

Slow spinning may not have enough inertia and RPM to engage the bendix so she might spin but not engage or else the bendix drive is shot???

let us know what ya find

After cleaning and tightening connections, tried again but with the same result. So I swapped out 12 volt batteries but still couldn"t get fire to the starter. Finally took battery and starter to Advance auto who tested them. Battery needed a charge and still couldn"t get the starter to spin. I"m not sure whether to try and re-build or look for a re-manufactured starter. Any ideas? Thank you

I tend to agree with Old. I know sometimes with a low enough battery the starter on my WD will spin but not engage. Make sure the battery is well charged and doesn't have any bad cells as well.

Sounds like you need to do the clean brite tight test. Clean all connections, make sure they are brite and tight. Clicking tells me you have a poor connection at that point and if so yep it will not work
