I'd like to have a 185; a low houred one that has seen little use and no abuse.(same one everyone wants). Seems odd to me that when I look at 185's on the net, the majority of them say "low hour" and many list the hours below 4000. Didn't anyone ever use these tractors, or were the tachs noted for breaking. (Or is it just too obvious someone is lying?)

When they came out with the 185 in 1970 they saw, shortly after, the end of many small farms. Not the main work horse anymore and then the skid loader replaced many 185s with loaders. Many farms have 200 hp loader tractors instead. There are many 185 tractors with tons of hours but I have seen many with low hours too. Can't rack up alot of hours on a hobby farm or on a retired farmer's place. That's where many are. That's my theory.

How much are the 185's worth or how much are you willing to spend? In my experience the tachs do have a thing for breaking and the only way to replace a broken tach is to buy a $400 elec. one. You can still buy cables but no tach. This may be why none of them get fixed. The cabel isn't to bad but the tach is kinda hard on the wallet.

I like the $50 mini electronic tachs. They run 4/5 years on an internal battery, keep tract of RPM and engine hours and when the battery dies, you toss them and get another one.

Where do you get them? I've not seen any battery operated tachs though I'd like to try one on my 6 volt systems. Do they sense rpm off the coil? Thanks,

Most of your motorcycle/ATV dealers should be able to get you one. They take their info from a plug wire. Don't matter how many cylinders an engine is, just if it is 1, 2 or 4 cycle. Radio Shack sometimes has them. Do a web search for mini tach or tiny tack, sometimes you can find them on ebay also.

Thanks, John. Now that I've looked at the web site, I remembered that I had looked at these a year or so. Also, I have a similar device on my 1952 Ford Victoria. Looks like the way to go for a 6 volt system - 6 Volt electric tachs are hard to find at a reasonable price.
