not very familiar with tractors as i just moved. bought an old model b with a c motor. is converted part way to 12v. has a 12v battery, and alternator, with a 6v starter. would i be better to convert to 12v or go back to 6v? what is involved in converting to the best and least expensive system?

the B and C had the same engines, the B ran at 1400 RPM and the C at 1500 RPM. the ALT on my C tucks up under the hood, like the old generator did, so it wasn't an issue for the steering arm. I think the bulbs i have (12v) are off a WD45, mabee a diesel. just my 2 cents

Unless I've missed something, you are converted to 12 volt. The starter works fine on either 6 or 12. If you have lights, the bulbs must be changed. If you have a working alternator and 12 volt battery is good, I'd sure keep it the way it is. Even if one were bad, I'd stay with 12 volt.

i'm not sure how to fit a 1 wire generic motors alternator behind a c's steering linkage. can you post a pic? starter will work fine with 12v. as a matter of fact, i don't think there is a "12v" starter out there? do you have a distributer? get a pertronix ignition and coil, it'll be the best money you spend.

Gees whiz, am I missing something here? Seems like Joe said tractor was a B with maybe C motor, motor has nothing to do with steering arm being in the way of alternator. And an alternator can be installed on a C as picture will show.

Joe are you sure that your tractor engine does not have a mag instead of a distributor?? Distributor does not have extrenal coil as Old pointed out.

i believe the steering is a b so it is not in the way. the alternator is 2 wire going into the old control box, one side going to the ammeter and the other to one of the switches, some of the wiring is hosed up and disconnected, but that is something else. has the distributor on the left side looking from the front, cannot find a coil, but it should be there. where would you find the parts you mentioned?

If it is a distubutor then the wire from the center of the cap will or should go back to the coil. But if its a mag then it will not have a 5 wire cap but a 4 wire cap and the coil is inside of the mag and can not be seen unless you open it it
