A local farmer has a couple Allis Chalmers model U's and is looking to sell them in a couple months. I haven't seen them yet, but a friend told me that one is on rubber and one is on steel. He said both are complete, and appear to be in fair/good condition. I'm trying to determine roughly what they would be worth. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

In the last couple years, I have aquired 6 or 7 U's. I have paid between $1500 to $3500 for good, running, tractors. Value depends on overall condition and how original they are. There are lots of old U's that no longer have all their original parts and have had lots of farmer modifications done to them. Air cleaners, carbureators, wheels, and magnetos are often not original.

Brian, I now this won't help you, but I just thought I'd pass this along. I have the reciept for a pair of Allis Uniteds purchased by my late uncle in 1953 from the local Massey-Harris dealer. He paid $300 for the pair, made one good one up and keep the remains for parts. Ran that United till the day he passed away in 1993. He had been an aircraft mechanic during the war and kept all his tractors in better than new condition all his life.Used the United for the heavy belt work (filling silo and running the hammermill).

Today's Featured Article - The Engine Rebuild Kit - by Curtis Von Fange. I always liked engine rebuild kits. They have all the replacement parts for overhauling an engine without going to the store to get gaskets, special measuring tools, or miscellaneous parts. They come neatly packaged, clean and tidy. But it's important not to let that packaging lull you into a false sense of security. The appearance of matching sleeves, pistons, rings, and bearings can cause frustration and agony if not properly measured and installed in a workshop environment. Following c ... [Read Article]
