Have a neighbor that is looking at a 190XT. Wondering what to look out for, as to any inherent problems that these tractors had. Shows decent care, and around 4000hrs I think. LE

Take it for a drive and make sure it doesn't pop out of any of the gears. One known problem with them is when the trannys get some wear on them they jump out of gear and to fix that is big $$$. I know in my area average price for one in good shape is $2000-3000.

Which series? Series I was basically a D19 rear end- too light for 93 hp. (D19 had 63 hp) Factory had updates, some tractors got them. I believe they were wider final gears, and planetaries in the finals were different. (Cutaway view in Series I brochure has a bull gear meshing to the drive axle- no 'sun' gears). Find a knowledgable older dealer for details. Don't know if all updates would be on the Series II, but by Series III they would be. 4000 hrs on a 40 year old tractor? Not likely. Two pto options- what AC called 'continuous' or independent 540/1000 rpm operation. Hydraulics were independent- power whenever the engine was running.

Need to add some corrections to Larry's comments.
The 190's did not have planetaries, no matter what series. The change was to a larger axle and to a beefier differential. Bull gears did not change until the 200's. The planetaries did not start until the 7000 series.
Later 190s also had transmission improvements.
190's did not have an independant pto. Ther was a mechanical and a hydraulic engagement option. Both were only live using the power director clutch.
I don't have my book hady to give the exact serial numbers of the changes.

Your explanation about the pto makes sense, given the cutaway view I was looking at in their sales brochure. Their terminology was 'continuous' and 'independent' for the two options and 'driven directly off the engine'- but in looking at it, everything was driven from behind the foot clutch. So with the 'independent' option....you could engage the pto at any time, but if the foot clutch was disengaged, the pto would not be turning?
