Head gasket installation?

Fellas, I will be installin a new headgasket after replacin a stuck valve that I broke and a bent pushrod that I found on this ol WD45 I just bought. I was wonderin if any of you "seasoned" veterans had any tips or anything on this project. Should I use anything on the headgasket IE paint,grease or just install dry? Ive always heard dry but havin not done one before thought I'd check with you guys and see what the general consenses was. Thanks alot, Hoss

I use spray copper coat and never had a problem. I use it on all gaskets.

I have used the copper spray on an IH 460 diesel head and it worked great. From what I understand, it can be used for a cast iron head is joining to a cast iron block.

On the other hand, I did a head gasket on a Nissan truck several months ago with an aluminum head. The guy at the machine shop said do not use copper spray for joining an aluminum head to a cast iron block. The metals expand at different rates and the gasket has graphite on it to accomadate the different expansion rates. He said it is meant to move. For iron to iron though that"s not an issue and copper spray works great to seal it.

I always use copper coat. It may not be needed but then on the other hand it also will not hurt. I figure it this way if I coat it and it works good if I don't then I should have so I always do so I know its more likely to work

Doping a (standard head gasket will not hurt a thing) The standard head gaskets are manufactured to be used without any dope being used. Special head gaskets on the other hand must be doped. I think word of mouth about what someone else had done has clouded the issue because of knowing dope was used but not knowing why. The only other tips would be to make sure the threads are clean and lubed. Look at the threads close on each stud to make sure they have not been stressed. Torque to specs by starting in the center working in a circle to both ends. Set the valve clearance. Start the tractor and bring up to run temperature. Shut down and re torque to specs again and reset the valve clearance. Warming the engine and retorquing is as important in making a head gasket hold as the first torque.

There is a great product out there called Hi-Tac gasket sealent, it comes in a spray can and is a great sealer, Just coat both sides of the gasket nice and evenley with the sealer right before you install it. Just dont let it dry before you install. You can pick it up at about any auto part store or ag dealership. good luck

We've used Hi-Tac and it works great.
However, after spraying both sides, we'd let it set for about 10 minutes.
This let it get very sticky and helped hold it in place when there weren't any studs or alignment bushings to hold it; like on a V-8 engine.

Some guy told me that Hi-Tac was the only thing that would keep an Oliver diesel head gasket from blowing out.

As Al said, even-coating is important

BYW, don't get it on anything else.
