Allis Still not running right

Hello everyone. Here I go again. I am still working on my Allis B and still have not figured out the cause of it running so rough. I have done a recent valve job and replaced the carb with a rebuilt carb. I had it running great at an idle but would blow black smoke and run rough at a higher idle or wide open. I am quite certain that with all the help and suggestions you all gave I now have it timed correctly and the plug wires all in the same place. However it still is rouning rough at higher idles and blowing black smoke and fouling the plugs. I have notice also that at times it would fire on the first turn really quick. At other times not as quick. Through all kinds of trial and error I have noticed that there sometimes is a weak spark or no spark and then it gets better. The mag on this tractor has been butchered up and there currently is a coil and resister on the outside with holes drilled through the side of the mag with wires conncecting to the points and the coil wire soldered to the pin that the top outer mag cover is conected to. Is it possible that a weak spark would make it not burn the fuel properly? I have drained the tank, cleaned the tank, taken the sediment bowl off and cleaned that and replaced the filter in that. I have doubled check the valve adjustments and they are fine at .010 The points and the plugs are gapped properly as well. There is new plugs, new plug wires, new coil and new condensor. I have not replaced the points. Would it be worth changing this back to a mag again? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Last year I did a tuneup on my 1949 Model G. I replaced the original plugs with Champion J8's. Soon after I started having trouble with hard starting, low power, and lots of black sooty smoke.
After a couple of carburetor overhauls, and an air filter cleaning (with no effect) I broke down and bought new plugs, Autolite 303's. Instantly all the problems are gone, and the little thing runs great.
I learned this years ago when racing in the sixties, but I guess I needed a refresher.

If you had the idle set and you turned the power jet adjusting needle in and you could not get the engine to slow then the needle is short and not entering the seat or the seat was not put in at all. Is it a Zenith? I took a carb off one a running B and traded with someone on the board several years ago that was having your type of problem. The carb he sent me was a MS and was made to be used on Ford tractors. The venturi was to large to run on the B. You should have something that looks like this.

I believe you are correct. I have talked to the company I purchased the rebuilt carb from and am in the process of returning it and try another one. They could have possibly sent the wrong carb even though it looks similar to the one I had taken off there are some features different and it does not look like the diagram you have sent. Thanks for all the help and support.

I agree with Old if the original carb had no main jet adjustment, you probably have a replacement carb that was made for another engine with a larger main jet than the original "C" carb.

Black smoke says you have a carb thats running way to rich. If that carb is like the ones on my Cs it has no main jet adjust ment which can be bad because you can't lean it out. It may have a bad manijet in the carb also if so you will need to replace it.

Thanks Old. It could very well be the carb. This carb I have on it now I just bought as a rebuilt one. It has the top screw adjustment and it has the adjustment on the front bottom that is like a small brass rod with a smaller rod going through it like a T that screws in and out. This particular adjustment screw really doesn't make any difference to how it runs no matter how much or which way I turn it. Then as far as I can see the only other adjustment would be a screw adjustment on the back side against the engine block that the rod from the govoner attaches to. Thanks once again Old for you help. If I stick with this I think I will get it running better some time.

That adjustment you have on the lower part of the carb is the mainjet. If you screw it in all the way it should kill the engine if its working as it should be working. If it doesn't then you have a carb with problems. It could be missing the jet inside which I have seen before and would be the fault of the rebuilder. Or it could just be that who ever rebuilt it didn't get it as clean as it needed to be. Most of the time if you set it about about 1.5 turns out from bottoming out it should be close to where it needs to be if as I said its working as it should be. But either way your problem is that the carb is running to rich and need to be leaned out some

Old has zeroed in on a likely problem. The carb rebuilder may have put in the wrong jet. I put an adjustable jet in a C carb once and having no adjusting screw, it ran like yours. Also, is the air cleaner breathing properly. To check that, take off the connecting hose then run the engine.

Thanks for your advise. I did check the air cleaner exactly how you have suggested. I disconnected the hose and it ran the same. Thanks again, I really appreciate everyones help.

All that hose is for it to make sure air has to go in and out of the air cleaner to the carb. It will run just find with the air cleaner to carb host off. It can be a bear at times to remove and on my C I have to remove the air cleaner assembly to remove the small piece of hose. But it would not hurt if you remove the air cleaner and look it over good and make sure its not clogged up which does happen and if it has it will run and smoke black smoke
