my 42 C is 12 volt and was when i got it. i love it. i dipise 6 volts and always will. mine has a 10 ohm resister so i don't think its a one wire set up. the bulbs are not expensive 12 volt, they are cheaper that 6 volt bulbs, and u will need a 12 vlot coil, they are the same price 12 or 6 volt. i have 3 12 v lights and 2 12 v flasher on my C and still have plenty of juice left over. if my battery dies (also needs to be 12 v) i just trun on the key and crank start it, it fires the 2nd time, every time. just my thougnts. jk

Hi Johnny,

I did just that on my '42B and I highly recommend it. I discuss the particulars on my system conversion here. Your hardest part will be the brackets mounting the alternator. If you are not handy in that area, I can link you to a source that sells custom-built mounting brackets to mount a Delco 10SI alternator on a B. I am assuming you already have the standard 6v generator and therefore your engine block has the two tapped bosses for mounting it. Those bosses will be required for mounting the alternator. Otherwise it will become more of an effort, requiring a custom arrangement. My '42B had them even though it was not supplied with electrics from the factory (wartime B), so yours probably has them also. The very early Bs didn't.

If you investigate the cost of an alternator (Delco 10SI), you'll find it to be far less than purchasing a rebuilt 6v generator. Keeping that 3 position switch for the lights can be quite expensive in the future should you need to replace it. Lose it now and be ahead of the game. Same goes for the generator cutout. Keeping that stuff is for restoration purists. You'll have a more dependable system using a modern alternator.

liked how you converted your 42b. have acouple of questions as my b will be this winters project? my alternator is a 2 wire, with all the wiring needing to be replaced, so how much is different from mine to how you have yours wired? how did or what is involved in converting to the start button and getting rid of the rod? it sure sounds like a great idea.

I agree with Denny. There really is no advantage to converting your B. It will start and run very well on 6 volts.

Johnny, the first question is why? Most B's start nicely on a 6 volt system if the cables and starter are good. Cables need to be at least 1 awg. 0 awg is even better.

If you do change, it will cost some money and require making some brackets for an alternator or modifying your existing brackets if you have a source for a 12 volt generator. If you have lights, your bulbs will need to be changed.

It is a lot easier to make the 6 volt system work than it is to switch to 12 volt.

Our 39 B is 12V - was like that when we got it from under a tree in a paddock! Starts first swing of the crank every time (It"s more fun than the starter motor)
