did you time the mag to the engine when you installed the new mag? you could have spark, but not at the right time. Bob

Well since he drove it in then it was running so timing should not be the problem unless you took the cap off and got the little gear out of place which is easy to do. Most likely the main problem is the points need cleaned or replaced because if they sit for very long the points corrode and will not work if that has happened. If the points aren't good and clean you will not have spark now matter if its timed right or wrong you still will not have spark.

Hi Keith,

Assuming your mag is the common FMJ, this may help as far as checking the timing.

i apreciate all of the info.i have had a lot of trouble because i could not see the timing marks on the flywheel.i finally got number one on tdc using my finger and a welding rod.then i installed the mag cap where the rotor would be lined up with number one.at tdc the metal wheel with the mark was not lined up on center so i could not line the c up with it .i guess it was off when they installed it on the motor.i put it back together and it ran good but i guess if it was timed right it would run even that much better thanks a lot keith kd4qlo

Be sure you have original type copper core plug wires. Are the plugs good? Autolite 295 works well. The magneto clicks, or "snaps", each time it fires. Take out one of the plugs and clamp it to the tractor so it's well grounded, with the wire attached. If the mag is working, you should get a spark when you turn the crank. By the way, if you're hand cranking, only pull up. I forgot that and pushed down on the other side, and now I'm recovering from a broken arm.

Look at both ends of the plug wire. On one end or the other you will be able to see the wire if its true wire wire you can see that if its a car type plug wire which will not work on that mag you will see that also. If you need a mag manual just drop me an e-mail and I can send you one. If I remember right it has a trouble shooting guide in the manual also
