G carb rebuild

Is there anything to watch for when rebuilding these carbs ? Tricks, tips, wear, cracks, weak spots, etc. ?

It acts like it is not getting enough fuel. When I get into some tough going (quack grass) the governor hunts. If I throttle up too far, it acts the same way. I'm guessing that there is a chunk of crud in the float valve or the main jet.

I have already cleaned out the fuel tank and installed a sediment bowl. Other ideas ?

On my G, my dad had years ago put a small piece of wire in the main jet. Bent it on each end so it would stay there. I overhauled the carb and discovered the wire and removed it. Put it all back together and the engine did exactly what you describe. I tried everything to get it to stop but it always wanted to hunt. Finally took the carb apart and put the little wire back in the main jet and it ran fine, no more hunting.

So it could be that it is running too rich rather than too lean.

Now that is a new one. If I don't find anything wrong and it works the same after putting a kit in it, I'll try adding the wire. Any idea on the diameter of the wire ?

It was a pretty small wire if I remember right it was about half the diameter or so of a paper clip or even smaller.

If you have access to some other jets to try you could just try a new one or one size smaller. I susspect that the reason the wire worked in mine was that the jet was worn and the wire reduced the overall opening.

My G is just about done with an overhaul so I will see how it does with everything done up right.
