i am getting a whine in the transmition in my c. hear it when in any gear with the tractor in motion. when i push in the clutch noise stops. is there a bearing that usually goes out. how hard is it to replace bearings for a novice mechanic? i have the service book. if you know how, can you give a brief discription of the process? thanks

when i pulled the plug on the final drives the oil was dark black. so i assumed it did not have water in there. i will drop it to see for sure. i just changed the trans oil yesterday and ran it around. i did not check it for color afterwards. it has the hydrolic setup on the right of the pto shaft, with a long lever going to the out side of the right fender, all of the fittings are caped off. did i put the wrong oil in it?

If your tractor has hydraulics , transmission oil shoule be 20 wt. Preferrably Hydro/Trans.
Won't solve whine but will make hydraulics work better.

thanks old. i just bought this on about a month ago. trans oil was milky, it did not have a boot on the gear shift. i guess this is where the water came from. i have changed the trans oil with 80/90 and the final drives are full. this is not a working tractor, just a hobby for me. if you say it is common for the noise, i might just leave it alone and watch it. it is more or a nusance than a problem now.

You say the finnals are full but did you check them for water?? They like to get water in them also and if it has water in them they do make a lot of noise. I would also recheck the tranny and make sure the oil hasn't turned milky again because a lot of times it takes a couple of oil changes to get the water all out.

Pretty common to have a whine in them both of mine have it. But you need to check all fluid levels both in the tranny and the drive pans under both sides. That whine could be water in one or more of them and or low fluid levels in them. You can check fluid in the drive area by pulling the fill plug but to drain them you have to remove the pan and thats also the only way to check for water and finding water in them is common
