D17 Series III coil

OK. I assume I fried my coil, so I went to my local Agco guy, tell him I want a new coil for said machine, and I get one with a resister tacked on the side of it. I told him my old one didn't have one on - in fact, I took the old coil in when I ordered the new one because I'm not well versed in these things - but he said it's what's presently called for and will work. Should I put this thing on or am I getting bad info?

So - there are no other changes I have to make in the system now that I've added the resister - I'm to assume it works with the same points, condenser as my old coil without the ballast?

Is this a 12 volt system that was originally 6 volts? On these tractors that's been converted to 12 volts usually have a ballast resistor installed in the wire from the ignition switch to the coil. If you have a resistor installed in the wire to the coil now you need to remove it.
Just hook the wire from your ignition switch to the + terminal on the new coil if your battery is negative grounded. Hal

From what I'm gathering, the D17's generally came through as 12 volt; mine is postive ground and it all looks pretty original. But to add to the confusion, the ITT manual I have seems to indicate a resister in the wiring diagram of the Series IV but not the series III. What's with that? Thanks CP

They use those ballast resistors to drop the voltage so the points will last longer. You will
need to connect the wire from your ignition switch
to the _ minus terminal on the coil. Since the new coil has a builtin resistor you should run a new wire from your ignition switch to the coil. Napa sells those 12 volt coils with a builtin resistor too. Hal
